A Name

By

The sun told me that the universe has no name. Every God has to be given one and a galaxy is not conscience enough to accept any it is given. I asked why, that a being of such magnitude should have the capacity to be named but the sun retorted that its magnitude was the exact problem.

To give a name to a god is to give them more power than they already have. Try giving infinity more power, more space; it will result in no change. The sun told me to look around, even if I were to name the universe, how would I? The things that surronded us were stars in the universe but not the universe itself. Naming a being you cant see is hard enough on its own, but gifting an omnipotent being even more power is straight lunacy. He told me to give up.

I wanted to agrue but what would I say? So, Instead I watched as the sun made its cycles around the world and stared at the darkness around me. He was right that the universe had too many componets to spot its core behind it all but I figured that If I could not see the universe then I would feel it. Thus I closed my eyes and listened. I listened for any hint of life, for a heartbeat, the one thing that all living entities share, and for a breath. When a gust of air reached my fingertips I knew I was close. Then a faint thumping graced my temple and finally the universe could hear me. All that was left was to name it and speak. But what name? What name fit infinity? I thought about everything I could remember from my life, of the history of my people, and asked myself what lived forever, then I spoke, a whisper leaving my tongue.

“I come to give you a name universe.”

There was no answer so I continued. “You, dear infinity, will now answer to Creole.”

The gust on my fingertips grew to a storm around me, it didnt last long and I waited to open my eyes till I felt nothing but the familiar cold on my feet. As my eyelids lifted I was surprised to see a set of eyes in front me, they were larger then any planet I had loved and scarier than any God I had refused to name.

“Human,” they said, low and breathless, “You have given me a name, and I have evolved, but no good deed goes without expectation. What do you want?”

I failed to hold back my smile. I was speaking to infinity, and in truth I did want something, I wanted them.
