And nobody hugged me like the ocean. The water was the only being desperate to keep me. His tidal waves pulled me deeper, hoping to caress my skin for a second longer, I would’ve let him if I wasn’t so scared of drowning. Then I met the moon. The waves introduced us when she was at her highest, she told me that she governs the strong. I asked her if that included me. Her light was startling when she laughed, “Don’t tell me,” she whispered, “Do you think you made it this far by being weak?” She asked the ocean what he had been saying to me and called me a warrior. I thanked her and watched the two bicker. She had the last word by time I felt the sun. He was arrogant but sweet. He burned me with shallow compliments for two days before I saw the real him.
I was under a tree when it happened, laughing with the pine before he peaked through her branches. He asked to sit with me, I let him and that’s when he told me how much he loved the sea. He only flirted with me to make him jealous but he was upset because it didn’t seem to be working. The grass called him stupid, the tree told him to just confess, I listened a bit longer.
“I don’t know if he likes me. I can’t make him feel what the moon makes him feel, what if he prefers her?”
That’s when I realized that the sun was blinding me out of fear. He didn’t know how else to be great if he wasn’t controlling. I finally gave my opinion and told him to just confess. The next day he did.
The sea was blushing when the sun asked, I watched them on the beach and smiled at their happy ending. Until I stepped in the water, and i noticed that the ocean no longer pulled me in. I was free to leave whenever, he did not care to stop me. That’s when I cried. With sand on my feet and leftover love dripping off my fingers, I broke down. The moon asked me what was wrong, I told her the truth. That no one loves me. The trees have grass, the sun has the sea and I have myself. She seemed not to understand. “Isn’t that enough?” She asked, but it wasn’t, not for me. “I have been alone for eons,” she continued, “and not once have I ever wanted something different.” I asked her why, she was sad when she said it was obvious: “The sea has always loved the sun.”
We were quiet after that. We watched the ocean follow the sun to the other side of the world and thought about our destinies. Apparently the moon had already written mine, and it came in the form of a tall man sitting next to me on the beach, watching the moon watch the sea.
